Taxonomic: Notes Xenolechia quinquecristatella (Chambers, 1878): Busck (1903:785) questioned the validity of quinquecristatella, stating that both he and Meyrick believed that the USNM specimen's of quinquecristatella, identified by Walsingham, were referable to aethiops. However, as the host plant of aethiops was not known to occur in NA, Busck retained the two as separate species. But then Meyrick (1925:69) subsequently included quinquecristatella as a synonym of Xenolechia aethiops (Humphreys & Westwood, 1845). Hodges (in Hodges et al. 1983) treated quinquecristatella as a valid species, but it not clear why. However, Lee & Brown (2008) likewise treated them as separate noting different host plants. Then Lee et al. (2009) erroneously treated the two as synonyms, citing Heppner (2003), who made no mention of either species. Correcting the error in Lee et al. (2009), Lee & Landry (in Pohl & Nanz (eds.) 2023) listed quinquecristatella as a full species with identity uncertain.
Synonymy:
