Distribution Data for Lymantria postalba
Large Map & Chart Report Errors About Maps
Distribution: Japan, including islands of Ishigaki, Tsushima, and Yakushima, and the Ryuku Islands; not found in North America north of Mexico.
Seasonality
and Size:
Eggs hatch in April, with adults appearing mid-June. Forewing length ranges 21-277mm in males, and 34-36mm in females.
Larva and
Host Plants:
Not much is documented on larval morphology, Pogue and Schaefer (2007) say it is “unknown”. A possible foodplant is a palm species, Livistonia subglobosa, although the illustration of this foodplant is associated with a drawing for “L. dispar” but authors Pogue and Schaefer (2007) suggest the “adults illustrated clearly represent this L. postalba”.
Similar Species:
  • Males distinguishable from L. albescens by forewing length (>30mm in L. albescens). Forewing ground color is brown in L. postalba males, and “white or white suffused with gray” in L. albescens. Genitalic illustrations provided by Mike Pogue, from Pogue and Schaefer (2007)
  • Pinned specimens of related species. (Hint: select View by Region on the related species page.)
Synonymy:
  • postalba Inoue 1956 ()
  • Photographs are needed for this species.
