Distribution: Guam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, Pakistan, and New-Guinea; not found in North America north of Mexico.
Seasonality
and Size:
Generations per year ranges from one to three in temperature regions; as many as 12 generations can occur in the tropics.
Wingspan of males 20-26mm and females 26-30mm
Larva and
Host Plants:
Newly hatched larvae are white with black heads. As they mature, the head color becomes dark brown and the body creamy white with darkened lateral spots. Serious pest of Zea mays (maize/corn) on Guam. Has been recorded on multiple different hosts (representing the Compositae, Gramineae, Cannabaceae, and Solanaceae) including, but not limited to: hemp, bell and chili pepper, hop, sugar cane, millet, foxtail millet, green foxtail, eggplant, Sorghum, and Johnson grass.
Description/
Field Marks:
Forewings are straw-colored to brown with light yellow to white hindwings. Hindwing margins in female dark yellowish-brown with pale yellow-white fringe. Male with pale brown hindwing marging. Males are typically darker in color to females.
Similar Species:
  • Easily confused for O. nubialis, the European corn borer. Identification is possible using male genitalia, although ther is no external characters that definitively separate O. furnacalis from O. nubilalis (Alma Solis, personal communication, December 4, 2014)
