Synonymy: |
betulana (Heinrich, 1926) (Exartema) - MONA 1983: 2798; TL: "male from East River, Connecticut (C. R. Ely, “VII-26-12”’)" (Heinrich, 1926:140).zelleriana of authors; (not Fernald, 1882) (Eccopis) misappl. |
Taxonomic Notes: |
Olethreutes betulana (Heinrich, 1926) was listed as a synonym of diallacta (Meyrick, 1932) by Gilligan & Brown (in Pohl & Nanz (eds.) 2023) following Brown (2005) who listed the name as "betulana Heinrich, 1926… [validation of Kearfott manuscript name][nomen nudum]". Although betulana was originally a manuscript name by Kearfott, according to McDunnough (1955) it was validated by (Heinrich, 1926) who referenced a specific specimen and illustrated the genitalia. This interpretation was followed by Powell (in Hodges et al. (1983) (Checklist) in which he listed "betulana (Heinr., 1926)" as the valid name for zelleriana of authors; (not Fernald, 1882), the species which Fernald described as a Betula feeder which he erroneously associated with the type of zelleriana.
It remains unclear as to whether betulana is a valid name or is indeed a nomen nudum. As there would appear to be no subsequent challenge to this interpretation, MPG follows Powell (1983) pending further clarity or revision. |
