Distribution Data for Argyroploce mengelana
Large Map & Chart Report Errors About Maps
Distribution: Canada: YT, NT, BC, AB; USA: Alaska; Greenland. (Jalava & Miller 1998) (Miller & Jalava 2000) (BOLD)
Genitalia: See Heinrich (1926) and Miller & Jalava (2000).
Similar Species:
  • 51a0631 Argyroploce aquilonana: is separated by genitalia. Caution: DNA barcode places both mengelana and aquilonana in the same BIN group.
  • Pinned specimens of related species. (Hint: select View by Region on the related species page.)
Synonymy:
  • mengelana (Fernald, 1894) (Sericoris) - MONA 1983: 2855; Lectotype: "McCormick Bay, North Greenland [~30 km northwest of Qaanaaq]".
Note: Lectotype designated by Miller (1970).
  • groenlandicana (Bang-Haas, 1896) (Penthina); Syntypes: Greenland
  • Taxonomic Notes: Argyroploce mengelana (Fernald, 1894), current placement following Gilligan & Brown (in Pohl & Nanz (eds.) 2023) and Aarvik et al. (2017), was formerly in the genus Olethreutes. This species is was reported as being represented at BOLD by BIN group BOLD:AAB9942, and therefore holarctic, in Gilligan et al. (2020). Based on work done by J-F Landry, it is our current understanding that mengelana is more likely restricted to North America and is represented by a subcluster in BOLD:AAB9941, a BIN which also includes a subcluster referring to A. aquilonana Karvonen, 1932. BOLD:AAB9942 is referable to Olethreutes bowmanana (McDunnough, 1923); genitalia of a barcoded specimen was confirmed by Michael Sabourin.
