| Taxonomic Notes: |
Aethes deutschiana (Zetterstedt, 1839) is listed as a Holarctic by Gilligan & Brown (in Pohl & Nanz (eds.) 2023). Although listed as extralimital (Palearctic) in Gilligan et al. (2020) based on DNA barcode with "several potential cryptic species in North America" referring to what had previously been attributed to deutschiana, specimens from northern Canada were subsequently shown to have barcodes matching those from Europe.
The names A. chalcana (Packard, 1866) and/or A. fuscostrigana (Clemens, 1864), both described from eastern NA but currently treated as synonyms of A. deutschiana, await revision and potentially refer to one or two of the cryptic species. As of 9/5/2020, no specimens in this group from east of Manitoba have been DNA barcoded. |
