Lyonetia candida Braun, 1916 was treated as a new synonym of L. ledi in Kuroko (1964:23). The synonymy was not recognized by Davis (in Hodges et al. 1983) and was rejected by Sohn (in Pohl & Nanz (eds.) 2023) based in part on errors not caught until after publication. Although BOLD has no DNA barcoded specimens from California, there are several from the Pacific Northwest in BIN group BOLD:AAJ2456, of which two were identified by Don Davis as candida. The BIN is well separated by DNA barcode from BOLD:AAE8230 with specimens identified as ledi from Europe and northern Yukon, BOLD:ACI8280 with specimens identified as ledi from Newfoundland to the Yukon, and BOLD:AAE8229 with a specimens identified as ledi from Korea by J.-C. Sohn.
It is unclear if the rejection of the synonym by Kuroko was justified. Morphological characters separating candida and ledi are currently unknown. DNA barcode appears to have limited value in separating many species in this genus and currently offers low confidence in evaluating the above mentioned BINs. |
