Synonymy: luctuosa [Denis & Schiffermüller] 1775 (Noctua) astroites Geoffroy 1785 (Phalaena) italica Fabricius 1781 (Noctua) speciosissima Bryk 1940 (Tarache) Taxonomic Notes: Tyta luctuosa: A Eurasian species released in North America as a biological control agent for field bindweed Convulvus arvensis. Collection records from Utah in 2007 by Jim Vargo suggest it has become established.
