Choreutidae
47a0033 – 2649   Pseudotebenna carduiella (Kearfott, 1902)

© Bob Patterson
Distribution: MD south to FL and west to TX.
Larva and
Host Plants:
Thistle: Cirsium horridulum, C. nuttallii, C. spinisissimum.
Description/
Field Marks:
See Heppner (2023), Lepid. Novae, 15(3-4): 123; fig. 2-8, F1, M1. Heppner stated that, "the single orange basal bar on the forewing is diagnostic for P. carduiella.” However, some specimens, including the lectotype, show a faint orange smudge between that orange basal bar and the inner margin of the forewing which can cause confusion with some similar species in the genus Tebenna. The additional combination of an orange and black patch along the middle of the coatal margin of the forewing without white speckling and a gray head would seem to distinguish this species. Also note that there are the dull lead colored scales throughout the forewings of species in both genera which can reflect bright white depending on the angle of the lighting and thereby significantly alter the appearance.
Similar Species:
  • 47a0034 Tebenna silphiella: Head is gray to orange; forewing with two yellow to orange basal bars; yellow to orange pm. band interrupted by white speckling at the middle and inner margin.
  • 47a0044 Tebenna gnaphaliella: Forewing with two distinct orange basal bars and an orange and black patch along the middle of the costal margin of the forewing with white speckling
  • Pinned specimens of related species. (Hint: select View by Region on the related species page.)
Synonymy:
  • carduiella (Kearfott, 1902) (Choreutis) - MONA 1983: 2649; TL: Anglesea, [Cape May Co.], New Jersey.
  • busckiella (Kearfott, 1902) (Choreutis); TL: Hastings, [St. Johns Co.], Florida.
  • carduella (Meyrick, 1913) (Choreutis) emend.; TL: (no type).
  • Taxonomic Notes: Pseudotebenna carduiella (Kearfott, 1902), n. comb. (Heppner 2023), was formerly in the genus Tebenna.
